Mactracker for chromebook install#
You could always select the boot drive from Bios, or do what I used to do when dual booting OS10 and Linux - install Refind from Linux. Could be due to the 20 or so partitions CR creates for itself. You can certainly install Linux in a partition but reports say grub doesn't recognize CloudReady (CR). Unfortunately, CloudReady no longer supports dual booting or I'd try it here. Ubuntu is where I started with Linux and I still like it, but I recently tried the newly released Mint 19.1 Cinnamon on a USB stick and it's very nice.

Yeah, the nice thing about being able to run via USB stick is to at least see if it'll work. If your system supports 64-bit then that's the way to go. If you're using the 32-bit version that may be the problem. Thank you for the info and the help! 'greatly appreciated! If my daughter was going to use it, I would have tried to find a battery somewhere. This may work out better since the HP Mini had such a small screen that I couldn't see the whole Darktable window when viewing on that small netbook screen.Īnd the old MacBook 2007 battery is dead, so if the magnetic power cord comes off, the whole computer just shuts down, so not ideal to let my daughter use it that way. But if that's a CloudReady computer now, then I don't have a Linux computer. The HP Mini was my computer I had set-up to learn Linux. I am probably going to try out Ubuntu 18.04 on the old MacBook 2007 so I could learn Linux. I'm going to try out CloudReady on my old Macbook 2007 just to see if it works.īut. There is another method listed farther down that writes to root but I haven't tried it yet. I've found a hack for it but it doesn't survive a reboot. The only thing that doesn't work out of the box is the keyboard backlighting, which most Chromebooks don't have anyway. Yeah, as mentioned it runs very well on my 2009 MacBook Pro. I'll try out the Neverware on the old Macbook 2007 as well, but if Neverware works on the HP Netbook, I may try out Ubuntu 18.04 (Or some branch of it) on the old Macbook 2007. No biggy on the Netflix as she could watch Netflix on her tablet if she wants.

When I look up the error code on Netflix it says that plug-in permissions need to be added for Netflix? But CloudReady does not seem to show Netflix as a plug-in. So that HP Mini has now been converted over to CloudReady.īut I noticed that Netflix does not work. Ran it off the USB stick and had my daughter see if she could see her work at school and. I downloaded the 32-bit version of CloudReady and it copied itself to the USB stick. Sounds like CloudReady would just the thing then. (Schools around here have students do their homework on Google Classroom.) If that works, my daughter can use that computer for her homework. If you're set on Win 10 though, give it a shot and let us know how it goes.īut I think I might try out this Neverware that rb0321 mentioned on that old HP Netbook. A friend was supposed to line up a couple folks that could use them but I haven't heard from him so I may just donate them to make room for something new. They are very usable for email, surfing, and all the other Google stuff. After install everything worked perfectly 'out of the gate' and after a couple updates both continue to run smoothly.

It basically made the 2007 into a Chromebox clone (Chromium) and the 2009 laptop into a Chromebook clone. What I recently found instead of Linux is Neverware's CloudReady download:

Ended up installing Mint the via ethernet port, then did a simple download/install of the WiFi driver with the Terminal. Had a problem installing every distro I tried since it has a Broadcomm WiFi chip. Linux works fine on the 2009 (Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz, 8GB RAM). I was able to load a light Linux distro (Mint Xfce) on my 2007 but it was slow and buggy, which often required rebooting, so it sat in a corner for awhile. You might be able to get Win 10 to work on your old MacBook but it's pretty much guaranteed to be very slow and extremely frustrating to use.

Have a 2009 MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo too, that is also no longer supported by Apple.

Have read some were able to upgrade theirs to 4GB (2 x 2GB) but it's not worth it (for me) at this point. Have some old Mac stuff here too, a 2007 iMac with similar specs, although it has a whopping 2GB (2 x 1GB) RAM and runs at a blistering 2.0 GHz.
